The Association has commenced an exciting new project that aims to recognise qualified professionals (and their employers) and support others in our industry to become appropriately qualified.

The project aligns to The South Australian Hairdressers Act 1988 (Act) and Regulations 2016 which requires all practising hairdressers and barbers to hold a Certificate III in Hairdressing or a Certificate III in Barbering unless they are apprentices under qualified supervision. This is the law and penalties of $1000 can be applied to both the employee and the employer rising to $4000 each for a second or subsequent offence.

The initiative will include the development of the SA Qualified Hairdressers and Barbers Register and the Skills Training Assessment And Recognition(STAR) Program (see below for more details).

The first stage of the project will focus on the creation of the SA Qualified Hairdressers and Barbers Register which has been made possible by an initial grant from the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

ACT NOW – Register Survey OPEN!

In an effort to ensure the Register meets industry need we are seeking your views via two surveys which will be open until mid July.

The surveys focus on the impact of unqualified workers and what value the online register might bring to you and the industry.  By completing this survey, you will also help shape the online register including potential pricing and marketing strategies.

Please note that there are two surveys, one for Qualified Hairdressers & Barbers including single owner/operators and the other for Salon Owners with employees.

PART 1: Qualified Hairdressers and Barbers Register

This online Register will provide the option for qualified professionals to submit a copy of their qualification to be verified so that it can be included on a searchable tool that will assist the general public to easily locate qualified professionals and promote the salons that employ them.

For salons with qualified staff this Register will provide a public verification and validation of their staff’s qualifications, marketing exposure to new customers and a mechanism to show their support for the professionalisation of the industry.

The register will include the following:

  • Information about what the site does and how people can use it
  • A searchable list of qualified hairdressers/barbers
  • A salon search tool
  • A way to apply and pay online
  • Advertising and sponsorship opportunities for industry.

The register will have a range of benefits and it will promote our industry as a community of committed professionals. It is anticipated that the register will launched by the end of 2018.

PART 2: Unqualified Hairdressers and the Skill Training Assessment And Recognition STAR Program

The Register  should expose unqualified workers and encourage them to become qualified. The second part of this project aims to provide a pathway and program for unqualified hairdressers that allows them to become legally recognised as having appropriate qualifications, training or experience to practice hairdressing in SA. Once recognised, they too can go on the Qualified Hairdressers Register.
